Facts About East and West Germany

Germany or federal Republic of Germany as you know today was divided into two separate two nations East Germany and West Germany after World War II in 1949 and the demarcation was along the line of Allied Occupation. However, in 1990, both the nations East Germany (earlier known as German Democratic Republic - GDR) and West Germany were unified again into one Nation. The reunification arose due to the popular uprising that overthrew the communists and since the Soviet Union also did not intervene.

East Germany was the Socialist State in the Soviet Zone of occupied Germany with East Berlin as its capital city. The geographical area of East Germany consisted of northeastern Germany rather than the all of the eastern regions. West Germany was established in 1949 with eleven states that were formed in the three Allied Zones Occupation held by the United States and with Bonn as its provisional capital city. When one discusses about East and West Germany, a mention must be made about the Berlin Wall, which was a barrier constructed by the East Germany in August 1961 completely cutting off West Berlin from the surrounding East Berlin and East Germany.
